Lectures

Lectures and workshops

I do lectures on the new media landscape, media use and the question whether the “new” in all this is complemented by a new mentality. My many years of experience as a Visiting Tutor at Goldsmiths College has made me aware of not only enlightening and clarifying things – but also to inspire and challenge old, familiar thoughts!

During 2009-2010 this has manifested itself in two different lectures;

First, a lecture based on the idea of the universal library, noting the opposing “Alexandrian” and “Babylonian” ways to process information. The lecture also points out the paradoxes we see in media use today, how users (file-sharers and media consumers) can be said to be both casually ruthless and lovingly considerate at the same time, and how official society (authorities, companies, those in favor of governance) find themselves torn between trusting and distrusting the unfettered, free media usage of these users. I am very happy to talk about Google Books in this context!

Second, a lecture on social media based on a historical and sociological perspective, which is accompanied by a more practical, hands-on examination of how social media can and should be used within your organization. My general overview is critical and does in no way seek to blindly celebrate the new social media like Twitter, Facebook, blogs and so on – but rather to see them for what they are, what their weaknesses and strengths are.

Please contact me for a possible collaboration! I always have several ideas in the pipeline; new ideas for lectures and workshops. I have previously lectured to library staff and library managers, college students and PR/information managers, and other audiences.
